Designed and built for the founders of the tableware company Dansk Designs, this is the only home completely designed by Jens Quistgaard, the founding designer for the company. With special attention to every historic and mid-century modern detail, from the dramatic pointed roofline to the handcrafted brass hinges, this home has remained cutting-edge since the time of construction through today.

The interior of this seven-bedroom home features walls of windows looking over the 10-acre swimming lake. Soaring ceilings, stone fireplaces, teakwood kitchen cabinets, a Japanese-style soaking tub, a wide spiral oak staircase, a wine cellar, stone and teak terraces, and a wealth of one-of-a-kind details create a unique and inviting atmosphere throughout all 7100 square feet of the sophisticated and comfortable living space.

Equally impressive, the landscape of this 20-acre property is one of the most extensive woodland gardens in the Northeast; this is the oeuvre of a gifted homeowner who spent nearly 50 years creating this four-season horticultural paradise. Tranquil and carefully planned garden paths wind around the shore of Cobamong Pond and offer endless opportunities to appreciate hundreds of varieties of Japanese Maples, Rhododendrons, and other specimen plantings. Magnificent in every season, the gardens are complemented by acres of fragrant woodland and the sparkling lake, where swimming, fishing, boating, and ice-skating can be enjoyed.

Early settlers named this area Cobamong, an Algonquin phrase meaning “hidden place,” which still holds true today, as the estate simultaneously camouflages with the natural landscape and enjoys breathtaking views of the picturesque and private Cobamong Pond. Today the setting continues to delight with its sense of peace and seclusion, all while being only minutes to Armonk, Greenwich, and Bedford—and New York City is easily reached by train or car within 40 minutes.

This home is currently on the market for $7,000,000. Here is the listing, via Sotheby’s.

An unusual pair of saucepans posted by FoundVintageStyle on...

An unusual pair of saucepans posted by FoundVintageStyle on etsy, c. 1957.
The following story comes from BNK, who had quite a collection of Dansk. Here’s her story:

“Here goes….

“My Mother was a very good cook and baker. I remember being aware, even at a very young age, that our house was always the center of everything. When I grew up and got married, my home functioned in that way too. I enjoyed cooking and collecting recipes — had over 600 cookbooks. I like to think that I became not only proficient, but quite good at turning out flavorful meals. We used to have a New Year’s Day Brunch every year with as many as 70 guests. (The fact that my husband owned and ran a hotel and institution supply business made equipment easy to come by.)

“The Dansk cooking to table serving pieces and casseroles were invaluable.

“It seems we were always interested in Scandinavian style furnishings. Period decor never appealed to us, nor did the ‘outre’ modern look. We were taken with the clean, tranquil furniture and furnished our bedrooms with Herman Miller and Knoll. Our dining room pieces are Jens Risom, the table opening to seat 16…. We took our first trip to Europe early in the nineteen sixties and became acquainted with Dansk at that time. That’s when we started amassing our pieces. We loved the lines, the functionality, the color (I’m a blue person) and the variety offered.

“I started my collection and eventually wound up with (literally) one of every size casserole. Actually, it was more than that because we gave sets to our kids too. Also, small and large paella pans, roasting pans, stock pots, and small saucepans. Saute and fry pans, candlestick holders, and pitchers were part of our collection too.

“We had the octagonal glasses — milk and juice size, an assortment of mugs, small and large wood cheese boards, several wood salad bowls with serving spoons and forks for them, trivets, some tablecloths and napkins, kitchen towels. We never passed a Dansk shop without looking to see what was new, on sale, or marked down.”

It’s impressive how someone who already had quite a collection of very functional cookware found Dansk Designs products important to her lifestyle, in shape, color, and usability. This is great evidence of Dansk’s clear product message. Thank you, BNK.

“Mad About Dansk” presented by Sarah Froelich at the...

“Mad About Dansk” presented by Sarah Froelich at the 2010 D-Crit Conference

Collections that inspire more collections, via Mint.
“When...

Collections that inspire more collections, via Mint.

“When I asked Dan how his collection obsession began, he said ‘Well, aren’t all our collections found when placing one thing next to another, and they start a conversation? For me, first stamps as a kid, then globes given to me when I was in school by an old girlfriend. (Ode to my wanderlust!). Black and white postcards in Italy [Dan spent 2 years living in Rome], sketchbooks, then our kids and their trophies. Natural stuff, shells/rocks, and wood found their way into a glass cureo table. My Fisher-Price manic wife (her childhood) found a couple paint-by-numbers, she/we loved the “art but not art” quality, and the cost which was cheaper than wallpaper to cover cracking plaster walls. This has led to a stress relieving past-time for a very hyperactive architect, a lead-in to cycling, speeding from site to site, to bike upon bike, to each a story but each the same beautiful, efficient form. With bikes came biking shirts, and tires and tubes. The bike rolled past a shop with a Dansk (Jens Quistgaard) pitcher in the window (remembered from childhood as the vessel for milk), leading to Quistgaard Peppermills and Bowls, each totally functional.’”

Alexandra Lange on Design Observer

Alexandra Lange on Design Observer:
Alexandra Lange discusses (her) obsession with designed objects, which includes her love of Dansk.
“Dishes from Dansk have been on my table since my first post-college apartment. This 3-piece set came stacked and tied together with twine. It was a great marketing ploy since you could only buy the pieces as a set. But it was an even better piece of cultural education since it introduced me to the inventive realm of Japanese packaging. The pieces were actually produced in Japan.”
